Independent sources keep landing on the same problem. Organizations can’t say who is accountable when an autonomous agent acts. NIST now builds agent oversight into its risk guidance. The Cloud Security Alliance found most organizations can’t see what their agents can access. MIT Sloan and BCG found 69% of executives expect that holding agents accountable will require new management practices.
The technology side is handled. Vendors sell tools that watch an agent and block harmful actions. What those tools can’t answer is the human question. Who is responsible once the agent acts? Gartner says it plainly. “Accountability for outcomes remains with the organization.”
